Temple Beth El Relocation (City of Berkeley) Congregation Beth El selected a vacant site in a residential neighborhood to relocate its synagogue and school. Neighbors and creek advocates opposed the facility due to potential environmental impacts. The city of Berkeley retained BLUHON to mediate the dispute. After four plenary sessions and thirty caucus sessions, BLUHON revised the site plan and drafted a facility operations agreement. After two years of planning deadlock, the parties unanimously ratified the revised plan and presented it to the City Council for approval. Congregation Beth El constructed the facility in 2004.
Marin County Transportation Steering Committee (County of Marin) The Board of Supervisors appointed a 24-member committee to craft a transportation plan for a sales tax initiative in the 1998 General Election. The Committee comprised countywide elected officials, and advocates from the business, environmental, real estate, and alternative transportation communities. BLUHON facilitated a seven-month dialogue resulting in unanimous ratification of a funding plan for open space, rail, bus, and Highway 101 improvements. The process served as the basis for further countywide dialogue.
Biodiversity Pilot Study (Alameda/Contra Costa Counties) BLUHON facilitated a two-year dialogue for a biological resource conservation agreement covering a 225,000-acre study area in eastern Alameda and Contra Costa counties. With technical support from Jones & Stokes, we facilitated a 24-member task force consisting of environmental, agricultural, property rights, and urban development interests and federal and state agencies. The process resulted in a near-unanimous plan for efficient, balanced resource conservation. The County Board of Supervisors accepted the plan.
Arastradero Preserve Gateway Facility (City of Palo Alto) The City of Palo Alto had sought to develop a visitor center on a treasured 600-acre nature preserve. The City retained BLUHON and Arkin Tilt Architects to facilitate a design process that engaged project supporters, opponents, and a city-appointed task force. A near unanimous design resulted which the city Architectural Review Board, Planning Commission, and Council approved. A partnership of the City and an environmental non-profit, Acterra, completed construction of the facility in 2007.
Redwood City Neighborhood Revitalization Plan (City of Redwood City) BLUHON conducted a six-month dialogue to plan the type, density, and conceptual layout of a new affordable housing project in a redevelopment district in Redwood City. We conducted two community workshops and facilitated a series of task force meetings. The local neighborhood council, private property owners, and housing advocates served on the task force. The dialogue yielded design guidelines for the new housing project and neighborhood-wide improvement priorities for long-term implementation. The city council approved the plan and Peninsula Habitat for Humanity and the City constructed the project in 2003.
